Golf Tips: Golfing in the Wind
Golfing in a windstorm usually isn't recommended, but there are
some beautiful days where you'll want to be out on the golf course
that are nonetheless quite breezy. Try not to worry too much about
your score (remember, windy conditions affect all players, including
your opponents). There are however some tips for golfing in the wind
that can help you keep your game under control:
Choke down
on your golf club.
Instead of putting your left hand (for
righties) at the end of the grip, drop that hand down about an inch.
The ball might not go as far, but you'll have more control over your
club.
Make use of the wind.
The wind can
actually help the flight of your ball, if you get a feel for how to
use it to your advantage. If you fight it, you'll just get
frustrated. Aim your ball slightly into the wind and let the wind
push it back as it lands. Don't try to aim your ball away from the
wind and expect it to hook back.
Widen your
stance.
This will lower your center of gravity and help
you keep your balance in the wind. It makes your swing shorter but
more controlled.
Realize the wind will effect
distance.
If you're swinging into the wind, the ball's
flight will naturally be shorter. If the wind is behind you, the
ball will go farther. Adjust your strategy
accordingly.
